Federal Crop Insurance Prevented Planting Basics

Prevented Planting Basics

Prevented planting is the failure to plant an insured crop with the proper equipment by the final plant or during the late planting period for the crop due to an insurable cause of loss such as excessive moisture.

What must I do to file a prevented planting claim?

If you are prevented from planting your acreage, you must provide a notice of loss through your crop insurance agent 72 hours after the final planting date if you do not intend to plant the insured crop during the late planting period.  In addition, you must report all timely planted, late planted, and prevented planted acres on your acreage report on or before the acreage reporting date.

Final Plant Date and Late Planting Period

The final plant date for corn in May 25th and the final plant date for soybeans is June 10th. The Late Planting Period for corn is 20 days (ends June 14th) and the Late Planting Period for soybeans is 25 days (ends July 5th).  If a farmer plants during the Late Planting Period, their guarantee on the unit will be reduced 1% for each day planted after the final plant date.

Prevented Planting Payment

Prevented Planting payment will be 55% of the guarantee for corn and 60% of the guarantee for soybean.

Acre Qualification for Prevented Planting Payment

Payment for Prevented Planting will be based on the number of acres that are not planted in the unit by crop. The acres to qualify for payment must be the lesser of 20% of the acres in the unit or 20 acres.

Contact Crop Insurance Agent

Farmers who may have acreage that they will not be able to plant by the final plant date or during the late planting period are encouraged to contact their crop insurance agent for more detailed information for their situation.
